The Cape of Good Hope
In 1487 the explorer Batholomeu Dias set sail from Portugal to find a sea route to the riches of the East. He was forced ashore at the southernmost tip of Africa, and he named the place Cape of Storms, alluding to the tempest he had endured. He was not able to continue his journey, but he was so convinced that he had discovered the route he was looking for that he later changed the name to Cape of Good Hope.
